L-theanine is the quiet achiever of the wind-down world — the amino acid in your evening cup of tea that is associated with feeling calm but alert. It turns up in a growing number of UK sleep and relaxation supplements, often paired with magnesium or ashwagandha. But does it actually help with sleep, how much have studies used, and what can a UK supplement legally say about it?

Here is the straight version. We explain what L-theanine is, what the research shows for relaxation and sleep quality, why a cup of tea will not get you near a studied dose, how it is commonly paired with ashwagandha — and the important fact that, in the UK, L-theanine carries no authorised health claim at all.

Quick answer: L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves, studied mostly at 200 mg per day, where one small UK-relevant trial linked it to better sleep-quality scores. It is widely used and well tolerated, but in the UK it carries no authorised health claim, so it cannot legally be marketed as a sleep treatment — it should be judged on study evidence. It is often paired with ashwagandha, which has somewhat stronger sleep research behind it.

What Is L-Theanine?

L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found abundantly in the leaves of Camellia sinensis — the plant behind green, black and white tea.[1] It is the compound most associated with the "calm focus" tea drinkers describe: relaxed but not drowsy. That profile is exactly why it has become a staple in evening supplement blends and, increasingly, in convenient formats like gummies.

Because it is naturally present in an everyday drink, L-theanine has a long history of safe consumption. But "found in tea" and "an effective dose from tea" are two very different things — as the numbers below make clear.

What Does the Research Show for Sleep?

The most relevant trial is a 2019 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which participants took 200 mg of L-theanine a day for four weeks. Compared with placebo, the L-theanine phase was associated with improved sleep-quality scores, shorter sleep latency and less use of sleep medication on validated questionnaires.[2] Stress and anxiety research has used a broader 200–400 mg range.

That said, the wider evidence base is still thin. A 2025 review concluded that for L-theanine the evidence remains "limited and inconsistent" and that "the science does not yet match the hype".[1] So the fair summary is: early signals are encouraging, particularly around relaxation and sleep quality, but L-theanine is not a proven treatment for insomnia.

Why a Cup of Tea Won't Cut It

This is the detail most articles miss. Measured analyses of brewed tea find only a small amount of L-theanine per cup — around 12 mg per 200 ml for both green and black tea in one 2024 study.[3] The studied dose is 200 mg. In other words, you would need roughly 16 cups of tea to reach the amount used in the sleep trial — and you would also be drinking a lot of caffeine in the process. That gap is the whole reason concentrated supplements and gummies exist.

L-Theanine and Caffeine: A Daytime Pairing, Not a Sleep One

You will often see L-theanine paired with caffeine. That combination is studied for daytime attention and focus, where L-theanine is thought to take the "edge" off caffeine. It is a useful thing to know — but it is a focus pairing, not a sleep one. For an evening routine, L-theanine is used on its own or alongside calming ingredients, not with a stimulant — and the NHS still puts consistent sleep habits and a wind-down routine ahead of any single ingredient.[4]

The Honest Bit: L-Theanine's UK Claim Status

This is where most supplement marketing goes quiet, and we would rather be upfront. In 2011, the EFSA panel assessed L-theanine and concluded that a cause-and-effect relationship had not been established between L-theanine and improved cognitive function, alleviation of stress, or maintenance of normal sleep.[5] Because those claims were not authorised, under UK and EU rules L-theanine carries no permitted health claim, and no product may state or imply that it treats sleeplessness or anxiety.[6]

That does not make L-theanine useless — plenty of legal, well-studied ingredients lack a formal authorised claim simply because no one has pushed a dossier through the process. It does mean an honest brand will describe what the studies observed, rather than promising a result. When you see a sleep gummy claiming L-theanine "cures" poor sleep, that is a red flag for the brand's compliance, not a sign of a better product.

Pairing L-Theanine With Ashwagandha

Because L-theanine's solo evidence is still emerging, it is frequently combined with ingredients that have stronger sleep research — most commonly ashwagandha. A double-blind RCT of ashwagandha root extract (300 mg twice daily, i.e. 600 mg/day, for ten weeks) reported improvements in sleep quality, with sleep efficiency rising from 75.6% to 83.5% and the time to fall asleep dropping from about 42 to 29 minutes.[7] A 2021 meta-analysis backed this up, finding a small but significant effect on sleep, clearest around 600 mg/day over eight weeks or more.[8]
